Vocational technical teachers, administrators required to obtain SEI endorsement
Updated on March 18, 2019
Vocational technical teachers and administrators have been added to the list of educators required to obtain the Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement under new regulations adopted by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on June 26, 2018. The state is making approximately 44 no-cost courses available to these educators in the spring and fall of 2019.
Under the regulations, vocational technical educators who had English learners during the 2017-2018 school year, and those administrators who supervise or evaluate them, will be required to obtain the SEI Endorsement by July 1, 2021. Members of the cohort who fail to earn the endorsement by then will not be eligible to advance or renew their license until they earn the endorsement. Upon showing a hardship, however, the department will grant an extension beyond July 1, 2021. Hardship shall consist of serious illness or injury, or other circumstances that are beyond the educator’s control.
Beginning in August 2018, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education e-mailed vocational technical educators and administrators who had English Learners during 2017-18 they were eligible for a no-cost course.
During the week of October 22, 2018 the department notified all educators assigned to the cohort by certified letter.
Registration for 2019 no-cost courses opened on November 19, 2018. Spring 2019 no-cost course registration closed on January 14, and courses began on February 4.
Fall 2019 course registration will close on September 9, with courses beginning on September 30.
Any additional seats will be filled by career vocational technical educators who are not in the cohort and therefore not required at present to earn the endorsement. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.
